Indonesian Sauteed Tempeh

Indonesian Sauteed Tempeh

This is a quick and delicious meal that is similar to the popular Indonesian Sauteed orek!

Ingredients

  • 1 8 oz packet of Tootie's Tempeh
  • 4 garlic cloves finely minced
  • 2 inches ginger finely minced
  • 1 Tbsp olive or avocado oil
  • 1 medium green onion for garnish chopped (optional)
Tempeh Sauce
  • 3 Tbsp tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 Tbsp lime juice (from about 1 medium lime), or sub with rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp sriracha or sambal oelek (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mince the garlic and ginger into small pieces. Set to the side.
  2. Crumble the tempeh. Set to the side.
  3. Mix the tempeh sauce ingredients together in a small bowl.
  4. Heat the oil and then add the minced garlic and ginger. Fry until fragrant and the garlic turns slightly brown (but not burnt), for about 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the tempeh to the pan. Turn up the heat and saute until the tempeh turns golden brown, about 5-6 minutes.
  6. Once the tempeh is browned, pour the sauce mixture into the pan. Turn the heat to medium low and keep stirring until the sauce coats the tempeh evenly and caramelizes into a rich dark brown color. This will take about 4-6 more minutes.
  7. Serve over a bed of rice and top with spring onions and sesame seeds (optional).
